A suspect has been found guilty of murder for his role in the 2018 shooting death of a Waukegan man, according to Lake County prosecutors.

A Lake County jury returned a guilty verdict for first-degree murder against Donyelle Roberts, 49, Friday evening following a trial that began last week.

Roberts, authorities said, participated in an attack that left Terrance Shelton, 51, dead.

Shelton was attacked and fatally shot on the night of Sept. 19, 2018, at his home on North Jackson Street.

Prosecutors said that another man arranged for the attack on Shelton, and Roberts helped subdue the victim while the other man shot him. The man suspected of shooting Shelton was killed in a 2019 shooting in North Chicago.

Roberts sustained a gunshot wound to the arm during the attack on Shelton. That night he went to Lake Forest Hospital and told staff that he had been shot in North Chicago, prosecutors said.

Phone records showed that Roberts had been in contact with the man who arranged the attack and that Roberts’ phone placed him in the vicinity on the night of Shelton’s murder.

Roberts will face a minimum prison term of 35 years when he is sentenced. He is due back in court on Dec. 14.
