A former bookkeeper for the Lake Zurich school system has been charged with stealing $42,000 from the district, police said Monday.

Lake Zurich police said Jessica McLeod, 48, of Lakemoor, turned herself in Monday to authorities. She has been charged with one count of felony theft and was scheduled to appear in Lake County court Monday, police said.

McLeod previously worked as a bookkeeper for Lake Zurich Community School District 95.

In March, school officials approached police about financial discrepancies that they said were connected to McLeod. Police said an investigation revealed that she diverted $42,000 of school funds for her personal use.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and anyone with information is asked to contact Lake Zurich, Detective Sgt. Andrew Heer at (847) 719-1690, ext. 6128.
