Democratic state Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, 37, of Justice won his seat in 2022, defeating incumbent Michael J. Zalewski. We welcomed Rashid’s commitment to ethics reform, and he has followed through by pushing legislation to strengthen the legislative inspector general’s independence. But we oppose his support for a graduated income tax. We also did not endorse him in 2024 over concerns about his focus on Middle Eastern affairs rather than state issues.
Republican Eric Su, 50, of North Riverside, is a personal trainer and small business owner who emphasizes affordability, government accountability and pension reform. He opposes a millionaire surtax, supports a constitutional amendment permitting changes to future pension benefits and favors stronger protections for whistleblowers. “We cannot tax our way into affordability,” he told us. Indeed.
Su’s positions offer voters a clear alternative on taxes, pensions and government accountability.
