A Valparaiso company will again be in charge of taking care of Munster’s ponds this year.

Getting ready for the arrival of spring, the Munster Town Council on Monday approved a $25,689 contract with Aquatic Control of Valparaiso for pond maintenance. The annual contract, about $1,000 more than 2015, covers five ponds in the Westlakes subdivision, four ponds in White Oak Estates, and ponds at White Oak Woods and Centennial Park, in addition to the Fisher Street Ditch.

The contract includes inspections and treatments as needed for control of algae and submerged weeds, with the work to begin in April.

Aquatic Control has held the contract for the past 15 years, as there are no other vendors in the area that perform this type of work, Town Manager Dustin Anderson told the council. However, he believes it may be time for the town to seek proposals next year.

In other action, Munster approved hiring of David Westland as town attorney. Once his transition is complete in approximately 90 days, Town Attorney Eugene Feingold, who has provided legal counsel to Munster for more than 50 years, plans to retire.

The Town Council will meet again at 7 p.m. March 7, as it approved changing its regular meeting dates from the second and fourth Mondays of the month to the first and third Mondays.
