While Notre Dame handily beat BYU 49-23 Saturday, coach Charlie Weis said the team still has plenty to work on as it enters its second week off this season.

“We had 11 penalties in the game, seven of them on offense, which is way too many,” Weis said, adding that he was especially concerned about the six line-of-scrimmage penalties his team incurred.

Two more things the team will focus on, Weis said, were tackling, which he thought suffered against BYU, and cutting down on the opponent’s big plays, which Weis defined as runs longer than 10 yards and passes longer than 20.

Part of this week also will be devoted to securing the next generation of playmakers and big-play stoppers for the Irish.

“The staff is going to hit the road [to recruit] Wednesday night,” Weis said. “Thursday and Friday will be our last two days of in-season recruiting.”
