The City Council last week approved the master plan for North Central College, months after the college began to detail its future in the downtown campus setting.

When the plan was first presented, neighbors balked, especially at the proposal to close parts of Van Buren and School Streets to cars to create a pedestrian walkway through campus. Neighbors were concerned the traffic would spill onto other streets.

The plan that was approved does not discuss closing streets, and the college has pledged to do a better job of enforcing parking regulations.

So far none of the proposed changes, including a new fine arts center and other buildings, has been implemented because fundraising for the projects is still under way, school officials said.
