Waukegan police said they were investigating reports of tainted candy given out on Halloween.

Police posted a photo on social media Sunday to alert residents to the incident and to advise them to check any candy their children had collected. The photo showed what appeared to be a pin or needle found inside a candy bar.

Police did not say in what part of the city the candy may have been given to a trick-or-treater. Authorities did not respond to requests for more information on Monday.

The post said possible “foreign objects,”  including metal hairpins and wire, were found inside a wrapped, unopened piece of candy.

“As a precaution, parents and guardians are urged to carefully inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Please examine each piece to the best of your ability and do not consume any candy that appears tampered with or contains suspicious objects,” the post said.

If you find anything suspicious, please call WPD at (847) 360-9000, or 911 for an emergency situation.

“This investigation is ongoing,” police said. “The safety of our children and community remains our top priority.”
