CTA Green and Pink Line commuters are in for a little more pain as the completion of major construction work on the Lake Street Bridge has been delayed again.

Work on the 110-year-old bridge has snarled some Green and Pink line commutes since Oct. 13. The bridge project includes removing the existing west leaf of the bridge, positioning the replacement bridge leaf and reconstructing CTA rails. Green and Pink Line trains typically operate on the upper level of the bridge.

Chicago’s Department of Transportation said Tuesday that normal rail service is now expected to resume “later this week,” and that it would provide a specific date once one is confirmed.

The city initially said normal train service would resume Monday morning. On Sunday, the city said construction crews needed more time on the project “due to the complexity of the connections between the existing and new bridge leaf elements and unanticipated alignment issues,” and that rail service would actually resume Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday evening, the city pushed the deadline again.

“CDOT apologizes to transit riders for the added delay and inconvenience,” the department said in a news release. “Crews continue working to complete the connections and alignments between the new bridge leaf and the existing bridge infrastructure.”

Until train service resumes, Pink Line trains will continue not to operate in the Loop at all. Trains will make all stops between 54th/Cermak and Polk before connecting with the CTA’s Racine Blue Line station, where riders can transfer to the Blue Line to get downtown.

Green Line trains will operate between Harlem/Lake and Clinton, and then again between Clark/Lake and the line’s South Side terminals. Bus shuttles are available between the Clinton and Clark/Lake stations.
