The House seat for the west suburban 84th District is open after state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit decided not to run for reelection. Vying to become her Democratic successor is Saba Haider, a DuPage County Board member who has a business providing wellness services, and has vowed to “make billionaires and corporations pay their fair share in taxes.”

Brian Scopa, 48, is a retired Navy commander whose critique of Illinois government can be summed up by this memorable line he shared with us: “We pay luxury taxes for economy services.”

He distinguishes himself from the more tough-on-crime wing of his party. We were particularly interested in his views on public safety. “We don’t need to return to cash bail to reform the shortcomings of the SAFE-T and Pre-Trial Fairness act,” he told us. We think he’d bring good common sense and fiscal restraint to Springfield.

Brian Scopa is endorsed.
