Joyce Mason, a longtime resident of Gurnee, has served as the representative of this far north suburban district since 2019. She is not aligned with us on fiscal issues and we did not endorse her in 2022, the last time she faced a serious Republican challenge. That said, we do appreciate that Mason, 57, has amassed a legislative record in service of Illinois kids, such as establishing emergency training standards at childcare centers. We also have appreciated her efforts at cutting out some of the bureaucracy in the state’s childcare licensing. Given that her Republican opponent, Tina Marie Durrant, has not mounted a serious or credible campaign in our view, we’re giving our nod to Mason this time around, trusting that she’ll also find time to tackle the state’s severe fiscal challenges.
