A semi-trailer parked at a business on Aurora’s West Side caught on fire early Tuesday morning, damaging the loading dock of the facility, officials said.
Firefighters responded to a fire around midnight at a large manufacturing facility in the 1000 block of Sullivan Road, Aurora Fire Department officials said in a news release. A semi-trailer had caught fire, spreading flames to the loading dock area of the building, according to the release.
The fire hydrants were frozen and the fire was moving fast, causing the call to be upgraded to a third level alarm, bringing a total of 41 firefighters to the scene, officials said.
At first, firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and began to extinguish the exterior trailer fire and the fire in the loading dock area, trying to keep the fire from spreading throughout the building, officials said.
The trailer was fully loaded with combustible materials, making it difficult to reach the center of the fire, according to the release. Eventually, an end loader from the city was used to move it away from the building and open the sides of the roof of the trailer.
Firefighters were then able to spread the burning contents on the ground, allowing the hose streams to fully extinguish the fire, officials said.
Fire crews were on the scene for over four hours and the fire was ultimately contained to the trailer and loading dock area, officials said.
An employee of the business was treated and taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and an Aurora police officer was taken to a hospital by a fellow officer for minor smoke inhalation, officials said. The officer was treated and released.
