A Geneva man has been charged with attempted murder following the investigation of an alleged domestic dispute, police said.

Craig G. Chaney, 45, of the 100 block of Syril Drive, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery with strangulation and domestic battery causing bodily harm while having prior convictions, police officials said in a news release.

Police responded to Chaney’s house around 6:40 p.m. Thursday regarding a possible domestic disturbance called in by another household member. Upon arrival, officers learned Chaney and a woman were involved in a verbal fight that became physical, according to the release.

During the physical fight, Chaney allegedly pinned the woman down and placed his hands around her neck on two separate occasions, police said. She was able to break free of Chaney only after getting a hold of scissors and stabbing his arm, officials said.

Police interviewed the original caller and another household member and collected physical evidence at the scene, police said.

Chaney appeared in court Friday and had his bail set at $500,000. He remains in custody at the Kane County jail and is due back in court Jan. 4, 2023.
