As Illinois community leaders debate whether to allow the sale of marijuana in their cities, Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland is confident that the ban of local marijuana sales in his town reflects the values of his community.

“It’s not controversial whatsoever in Frankfort,” said Holland of the Aug. 19 vote. “No resident approached me saying it was a good idea. A good number of residents approached me saying it was a bad idea. That it did not meet the values of our community.”

Holland said he was proud of how the Village board voted on the issue. Recreational marijuana is set to become legal in Illinois Jan. 1, unless communities vote to prohibit its sale within town borders.

“In our community, it was not controversial to ban recreational marijuana stores, distribution, cultivation, or whatever else,” Holland said.

Village records reflect that the Frankfort Village Board voted to prohibit the sale of marijuana under the local local liquor license code at business establishments during an Aug. 19 village board meeting. Four trustees voted in favor of the change. Two village trustees were recorded as absent, according to records.
