Challenges against major party candidates for office were filed by noon Friday deadline and are pending before the Lake County Board of Elections.

Michelle Fajman, election board director, said the bulk of the challenges revolve around paperwork issues.

Challenges were filed in the District 1, District 2 and District 5 races for the Lake County Council.

Democratic candidate Deonte Nance filed a challenge against incumbent Councilwoman Christine Cid, D-East Chicago, alleging she filed one form late and signatures were missing from the form filed in 2014.

Jeremy Yancey, a Democratic candidate for the District 2 county council seat currently held by Councilwoman Elsie Franklin, D-Gary, filed challenges against two of the other candidates for the seat.

Yancey challenged the candidacy of Catherine Campbell alleging she failed to properly fill out a form.

He filed a similar complaint against candidate Dorothy (Dot) Spires alleging a candidacy form she filed contradicts itself. Yancey said Spires indicated she had not previously been a candidate for office, in another section she indicated she had run for office. Yancey also alleges no campaign finance reports have been filed.

Darrell McCoy, Democratic candidate for the District 1 County Council seat, filed a challenge against incumbent Dave Hamm, D-Hammond, alleging he did not file one of his forms by the deadline.

Another five challenges were filed by Peter Katic, Democratic candidate for the North Township Board, against candidates Philip T. King, Edwardo D. Banda Sr., Jovanka Ivetic, Darren Taylor, and Al (Jr.) Weems alleging they did not file their forms properly.

Fajman said the candidates who were challenged will be notified to appear before the election board during a special meeting Feb. 27. The board will have the discretion to decide if any of the challenges merit action.
