The situation: After a scoreless first inning, the game headed to the second at a tension-filled Wrigley Field. Jake Arrieta worked around a hit batter in the top half to retire the Dodgers and the Cubs came up looking for anything to awaken their slumbering bats. Anthony Rizzo struck out leading off and that brought Willson Contreras to the plate.
What happened next: The first pitch from Dodgers starter Alex Wood to Contreras was a 90-mph fastball up in the zone that the Cubs catcher launched high and deep into the North Side night. The ball cleared the left-field bleachers before eventually ricocheting high off the video board. The estimated distance of the blast was 491 feet and it sent a jolt through the crowd and the Cubs.
The aftermath: Two batters later the crowd still was buzzing and it erupted again when Javier Baez crushed his first home run of the game to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers crawled back into the game but Wade Davis nailed down the save to keep the Cubs alive in the series with a 3-2 victory.
The reaction: “We’ve won four in a row plenty of times this year and there’s no reason we can’t do it again. Our backs were against the wall but we still like our chances.” — Arrieta
