The situation: After brilliant pitching performances from starters Jose Quintana and Max Scherzer, the game headed into the bottom of the eighth tied at 1-1. Pinch hitter Tommy La Stella walked, and Leonys Martin ran for him. Jon Jay sacrificed Martin to second before Kris Bryant struck out. Nationals manager Dusty Baker brought in Oliver Perez in favor of Brandon Kintzler to face Anthony Rizzo.
What happened next: Perez threw Rizzo a slider that he popped high into center field before it dropped between three fielders. Martin raced from second to score the go-ahead run and send Wrigley Field into bedlam. Rizzo rounded first and was tagged out but not before the damage was done.
The aftermath: Wade Davis came in and pitched a scoreless ninth, setting down Daniel Murphy on strikes, Ryan Zimmerman on a groundout to second and Jayson Werth on a popup to Rizzo.
The reaction: “You’ve just got to stay in the moment. These games, it doesn’t matter what you did the last at-bat — if you got a hit, if you got a home run. It’s all about that pitch and that next pitch, and you’ve got to be ready for that pitch.” — Rizzo
