player ready...The on-the-job learning process continues for White Sox rookie starter Lucas Giolito.
On Wednesday against the Royals, the right-hander learned a lesson in how to deal with some command issues and still be effective during the Sox’s 5-3 victory over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
Giolito didn’t pitch a clean inning until the fifth but limited the Royals to a run on four hits while walking three and striking out three in 6 1/3 innings. Leading 3-1 when he departed, Giolito got a no-decision when the Sox bullpen allowed the Royals to tie it with two runs in the eighth. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old Giolito was pleased with his progress.
“To come out and pitch on the road and not have your best stuff working from the get-go and then just keep grinding through to try and get ahead of batters to the best of my ability (was good),” Giolito said. “Luckily we were able to pull a good one out.”
The Sox pulled it out in the ninth on a go-ahead Jose Abreu sacrifice fly and an insurance run on Avisail Garcia’s single. That made a winner of Juan Minaya, who struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Garcia went 3-for-5 with a run scored, and Adam Engel drove in two for the Sox, who took two out of three in the series.
Through five starts this season, Giolito is 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA.
“There are still a lot of things to work on, especially coming out of the gate (and I) have to be a little bit better throwing Strike 1, but as a whole I’m happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish up here and I’m looking forward to getting better.”
Taking notice: Like the rest of baseball, manager Rick Renteria is keeping tabs on the Indians’ winning streak that reached 21 on Wednesday.
“When you have clubs as well-balanced as they are (and) … when everything clicks and comes together, they are an elite club,” Renteria said.
“Whether it’s the Royals or Indians clubs … you want a measuring stick and those are the clubs you’re looking at to see what you need to do to put yourself in the position they’re in right now.”
