Classic Empire, perhaps the top rival to Always Dreaming in Saturday’s Preakness, went to the track at Pimlico Race Course for the first time Tuesday morning.
And the horse who refused to train earlier in his career inspired raves about his professionalism.
“I thought he looked really awesome this morning,” assistant trainer Norman Casse said. “I’m always a little apprehensive the first time the horse goes out to the track, especially when you come to a place like Pimlico that’s got all kinds of tents and stuff to look at.
“Sometimes he’ll come out and be a little lackadaisical. But he was on the bridle and had really good energy. More importantly, he’s moving really good and looking really smooth. All those are very encouraging signs.”
Classic Empire jogged and then galloped in his first time over the Pimlico dirt, and Casse said the routine will likely remain the same all week.
“Everything about him physically is perfect,” Casse said. “Truthfully, I think he’s doing better than ever. I know that’s a cliche and it’s corny. But I love how aggressive he’s been in the morning, and all signs are showing he’s going to run a really good race on Saturday.”
