Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Nancy Crann’s friendly face is often the first you see at Max and Benny’s deli, 461 Waukegan Road, between Northbrook and Deerfield, where she’s a hostess/cashier. She also assists S. Keith Collins, a Deerfield lawyer. She worked at Jo-Ann Fabrics in Niles for 13 years. She recently moved from Deerfield to Buffalo Grove.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Rogers Park, St. Margaret Mary’s Parish. Ridge and Touhy, the only apartment building on the block at the time.

Q: When you were a little girl, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be a detective, like Nancy Drew.

Q: What was your first job?

A: I worked at Wirth’s Bakery, on Touhy, just west of Ridge, waiting on customers. I must have been 16.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

A: Max and Benny’s. Back then it was Bill’s (Bill’s Drive-in, 120 Asbury Ave., Evanston). Those hot dogs!

Q: What was your first job?

A: I worked in Worth’s Bakery on Touhy, waiting on customers.

Q: Do you play any musical instruments?

A: I try. I was music major but I was horrible at it, the piano. I couldn’t carry a tune to save my life.

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

A: I love Arizona. I think deep in my heart, I always wanted to be on a horse in the west, like Annie Oakley and Dale Evans. And my Cubs, in the spring they’re in Arizona.

Q: Do you have any pet peeves?

A: The lack of consideration for other people.

Q: If you could be on any reality show, which one would it be?

A: I don’t watch much, but it would be Big Brother. I just wonder if a nice person could succeed in that, without being so manipulative.

Q: What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen?

A: To me it’s the firefighters, those poor guys fighting the forest fires. What these guys do, I find incredibly amazing.

Q: Words of wisdom?

A: When you go to work, find something you understand and love. I do what I do because I like people.
