Nate Whitfield just won a five-year college scholarship from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for kids who’ve been involved with DCFS, including prior to adoption. Nate is a 2016 Glenbrook North graduate who was a student-athlete and active volunteer at GBN. He’s a balloon artist at Chicago’s Rainforest Cafe, and is going to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to study social work and business.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: I grew up in Northbrook. I spent a little time in Africa, and a little time in Georgia. I turned 8 (in Africa), doing some missionary work with family. An eye-opening experience.

Q: Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know.

A: I was adopted twice (first by his father and the late Claudia Whitfield, and then by Herron-Whitfield, his father’s second wife).

Q: What was your first job?

A: A caddy at Sunset Ridge, summer going into my freshman year. Oh, before that, my first job was working for my church, every Sunday morning, four and a half years.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

A: The Rainforest is right across the street from Portillo’s (100 W. Ontario St.). I like Portillo’s a lot.

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

A: For some reason, I’ve always had this thing about going to Paris.

Q: Words of wisdom?

A: Don’t disregard options just because they seem ridiculous.
