Evanston’s Dog Beach, closed due to beach erosion, may open at a temporary site south of the Church Street boat launch, a city official said night.
Lawrence Hemingway, the city’s director of parks, recreation and community services, told aldermen in a report at the Evanston City Council meeting that crews dredging sand around the boat launch may be able to create a 30 to 35 yards long temporary dog beach just south of there.
“We’re hopeful … as the contractor continues to spread the sand out that this area will be able to be used as a temporary beach” he said.
He said once the contractor is done with his work, public works crews will install a gate and put a fence up around the perimeter and also into the water on the south end, preventing the dogs from floating over to the Greenwood Beach area.
Hemingway said the goal is to complete the dredging work this week. He said he hopes the area to be open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
Ald. Melissa Wynne, 3rd, thanked Hemingway for his efforts on the issue.
“We just have to pray we don’t get a bad storm,” Hemingway said.
