Evanston Fire Department investigators were trying to determine the cause of a fire Friday afternoon that broke out in the attic area of a home on the 2300 block of Grant Street, causing extensive damage to the structure.
Dispatchers received a call about 2:20 p.m, of smoke coming from the eaves of the one-and-a-half story frame stucco single family house in the 2300 block of Grant Street, said Division Chief Dwight Hohl, the department’s media relations officer.
The residents were not home, though a contractor was doing electrical work on the structure at the time, Hohl said.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire. The contractor received a minor burn to one hand, Hohl said. He was evaluated at the scene and signed a medical release.
Once arriving fire companies saw fire coming from the eaves, “we knew we had a fire in the attic area,” indicating a blaze of a more serious nature, Hohl said. He said the alarm was immediately upgraded, which resulted in fire companies from five communities responding.
Skokie, Morton Grove, Wilmette, Winnetka and Northfield responded to assist, he said.
The fire was brought under control by 2:30 p.m., Hohl said.
