California-based St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s signature head-shaving fundraisers have made their way to Barrington.

Two local businesses, 18/8 Fine Men’s Salons Barrington and Shakou Sushi Barrington, are hosting the village’s first St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to support childhood cancer research on March 13 at the salon, 120 S. Hough St. The head shaving will take place from noon to 4 p.m.

“We are really excited to host the first St. Baldrick’s event in Barrington,” salon owner Jeff Eggert said in a statement. “This is an exciting day for the community as we team up together to raise awareness and funds for an important cause.”

The head shaving is not only to raise money for childhood cancer research, organizers said, but to also show the community’s solidarity with the children who often lose hair during chemotherapy. Participants can volunteer to have their heads shaved or just donate.

Eggert said the local fundraiser goal is $1,000. All proceeds will go to St. Baldrick’s, which fights for cures for childhood cancer.

“This is the first head shaving event in Barrington, so we are hoping to get a big turnout,” he said.

Walk-ins are welcome but organizers recommended participants register ahead. They can do so at www.stbaldricks.org/events/188barrington2016. On the day of the event, participants can sign in at Shakou Barrington, 121 W. Main St.

St. Baldrick’s raised almost $37 million in 2015, and more than $6.7 million to date this year.

St. Baldrick’s spokeswoman Traci Shirk said since its launch in 2000, the foundation awarded more than $178 million in childhood cancer research grants.
