Two Chicago men are facing felony burglary charges after they used a shovel to smash a car window and steal an expensive camera tripod in Midlothian, police reported.

Charmaine Davis, 21, of the 6400 block of Bishop Street, and Edward Pope, 25, of the 10500 block of Corliss Avenue, were caught after they led police on a chase Sept. 29 and crashed into a car in Alsip, according to police.

They said the Midlothian police officer was ordered to suspend the chase at 127th Street and Pulaski Road, but the thieves’ crashed into another car at 123rd Street and Pulaski Road in Alsip and fled on foot.

Officers cornered on Davis hiding in weeds in a prairie behind a Walgreens store, and Pope was apprehended in the 12100 block of Pulaski Road, police said.

Pope, the driver, was also charged with driving without a valid license, reckless driving, fleeing police, leaving the scene of an accident, speeding, no insurance and running a stop sign, police said.

After the arrest, police recovered the stolen equipment — a $1,500 tripod with a laser-leveling system — and returned it to its owner, a 52-year-old Frankfort man, according to police.
