A long-awaited project to raze Fire Station 1 and construct a new station at the same site is almost underway in Romeoville.
Trustees at a recent board meeting entered into a contract with Robinette Demolition for $103,400 to demolish the fire station at 18 Montrose Drive.
The village board also approved two other contracts, including an agreement for $66,212 for architectural services with Dewberry Architects and a contract not to exceed $3 million for construction management services with Corporate Construction Services.
Demolition of the station will begin soon. Romeoville Fire Chief Kent Adams said emergency personnel working at Station 1 will move and operate out of an industrial building until the project is finished. Administrative personnel from Station 1 will be transferred to other village facilities.
Village officials have said the decades-old station has been deteriorating, and building a new one makes more sense than a costly renovation.
“There is no doubt that Fire Station 1 needs to be replaced,” said Mayor John Noak. “We’ve talked about this project for quite some time.”
The board will soon receive bids to execute the station’s design, which may include an administrative area, he said. The board is considering several designs.
“All the designs look great,” Noak said. “It ultimately depends on what the final bids (costs) come in on.”
The village is using available funds for the project, he said. It could take up to 12 months to complete.

The board also approved an application for annexation, zoning and development of a new warehouse building on 15.4 acres at 1881 Normantown Road.
The 226,000-square-foot warehouse proposal by Molto Properties will complement a 189,662-square-foot building and distribution facility built in 2014 at 1485 Normantown Road.
Village officials said the building is in a great location because it provides convenient access to Interstate 55.
