Valley View School District officials approved a cleaning contract that is 2 percent higher than last year’s.
The $3.3 million contract with GCA Services Group includes an increase of $66,263 to help pay for a spike in overhead costs for employees, according to documents.
GCA has been providing cleaning servics for the district for 18 years, with 104 custodians working from 3 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. each day while school is in session.
Gary Gizaffi, assistant superintendant for administrative services, and Michael Lopez, director of facility operations, wrote in a memo to the school board last week that the cleaning company has been providing the district with outstanding service. Staff at the schools grade the cleaning company on its performance every month.
“GCA has consistently received high marks at every school throughout the months and years,” the memo said.
The company is responsible for cleaning floors, walls, windows, doors, countertops and furniture. The company employs 37,000 people in 46 states. They service shools, manufacturing and corporate office buildings, bio-pharmaceutical companies, nuclear power and energy facilities, utilities facilities and government buildings, among others.
The school board also awarded a $300,000 contract to Orange Crush for the second phase of site improvements at Jonas Salk Elementary School at 500 King Arthur Way in Bolingbrook. The project will reloate the bus drop-off and pick-up zone to a parking lot west of the building, separating parent and visitor vehicle movement from bus pick-up and drop-off. It is expected to be completed by the start of school.
The initial phase of the project, which was completed in 2014, included the addition of 30 parking spaces for staff and visitors in the main lot.The expansion reduces the line of cars during drop-off and pick- along King Arthur Way and down the block, creating traffic problems and conflicts with bus traffic.
The school board also agreed to award $376,750 to Bennett & Brosseau for a partial roof replacement at A.Vito Martinez Middle School at 590 Belmont in Romeoville.
The company will replace the north domed roof, which is about 21 years old. District officials said that splits are starting to appear and the membrane of the roof is getting brittle. The rest of the roof has been replaced within the last eight years, according to documents.
