For much of Sunday’s game, the playoff-bound Lions looked like the same old undisciplined, self-destructive Lions of old.

Their indiscretions included a muffed punt, roughing the kicker, careless turnovers, a blocked field-goal attempt and, of course, controversial plays.

“It was tough because we did it to ourselves,” said Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who threw two interceptions in his team’s 20-14 victory over the Bears. “You do that to a really good football team, you make it impossible on yourself.”

Luckily for Stafford and the Lions, the Bears are not a very good team.

The Lions (11-4) already had clinched a playoff berth Saturday when the Eagles lost to the Redskins. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he was happy to take Sunday’s error-filled victory regardless of its multiple imperfections.

“I don’t apologize for any victories,” Caldwell said. “We didn’t play well in the first half. I am not really concerned about anything other than that. I would be really concerned if we didn’t come back (from a 14-10 deficit).

“This was a (Bears) team that is fighting for its life out there. They have had a lot of controversy. Our team hung in there.”

The Bears weren’t happy about a couple of Lions plays. Lions center Dominic Raiola was penalized for stepping on the leg of Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson, and defensive end Ezekiel Ansah was penalized for hit to the head of Bears quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

“We don’t need a stupid penalty,” Raiola said. “There was no intention of anything ill.”

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on Ansah’s hit on Clausen:

“He was playing hard and trying to get to the ball. It was as simple as that. … We’re still on the field and we have to go out there and stop them.”
