Up to $5 million in damages at Wheeling High School came from Friday’s intense wind storm that left parts of the roof ripped up and flooding in some facilities, officials said.
Township High School District 214 has called an emergency meeting tomorrow morning to discuss Wheeling High, 900 S. Elmhurst Rd. The meeting is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. Thursday at district headquarters, 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights.
It’s expected that the school board will allow Cathy Johnson, associate superintendent for finance and operations, the authority to skip the competitive bid process required by state law in order to handle the Wheeling school’s repairs. The move requires a 3¿4 vote by the seven-member board.
The fieldhouse alone will cost more than $50,000 to fix, not to mention water, electrical, flooring and insulation damages across the property, according to a district memo. An insurance claim has also been filed.
The district did not immediately return calls.
