Veteran Chicago Fire defender Gonzalo Segares had surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his right ankle but could quickly bounce back and be available for a game next week.
Segares played 90 minutes in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Seattle but has appeared sparingly this season. He has played in five games with a lengthy absence attributed to a slow-to-heal high ankle sprain.
A Fire spokesman said Segares might be available for next Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Toyota Park.
The 31-year-old defender has played 10 Major League Soccer seasons, all with the Fire.
Surgery was performed by Dr. Anand Vora of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute.
