MIAMI — As he works toward his first championship, Miami Heat forward LeBron James will receive his third NBA Most Valuable Player award on Saturday.

Two independent sources confirmed the selection to the Sun Sentinel, with details on Saturday’s presentation yet to be released by the NBA.

James previously won the award while with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009 and 2010, with Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose ending that run last season.

The award is voted upon by national media, with that polling having been completed the day after the close of the regular season.

James will become the first Heat player to win the award, expected to again be presented the trophy at Sunday’s start of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series between the Heat and Indiana Pacers at AmericanAirlines Arena.

He will become the eighth player to win the award at least three times, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

James was so statistically dominant and so impactful on defense, that Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant, expected to finish as runner-up for MVP, said James was most deserving this season of the award.

James averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists, shooting a career-best .531 from the field. He recently finished fourth in the voting for NBA Defensive Player of the Year, with only shot-blocking centers Tyson Chandler, Dwight Howard and Serge Ibaka placing higher.
