Name: Wind Defying Packable Umbrella (46-inch canopy)
What it is: A packable umbrella made for Hammacher Schlemmer. It resists winds up to 35 mph that turn most umbrellas inside out. A patented overlapping vent system disperses wind to prevent inversion. The handle has a spring-activated automatic open-and-close button for quick and easy deployment (and retreat). The rim of the canopy features a reflective binding to improve visibility in low light. Although I tested the version that opens to 46 inches, the umbrella also is available in 43 or 54 inches.
The good: In the last six months I’ve tested three umbrellas that allegedly could defy the wind. This is the only one that always resists powerful gusts, plus it’s compact to pack. I never knew I could feel affection for an umbrella, but this one makes windy, rainy days almost fun. I head out ready for the challenge.
The bad: No real complaint other than I wish the umbrella also had a light in its handle like some I’ve seen recently. But a flashlight in the handle might leave less room for the excellent one-button open-and-close feature.
