Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s probably not a bad thing for the Terps that they found themselves trailing College of Charleston two games ago, ultimately needing a late Pe’Shon Howard jumper to survive.

Maryland has six newcomers on the roster, and an early dose of humility is probably helpful, if only to demonstrate how hard you must work against high-level opponents.

Speaking of high-level opponents, Maryland departs for New York after practice today for their tournament games against Pitt on Thursday and the winner of Illinois-Texas on Friday at Madison Square Garden. I’ll cover the games, then hustle back for Terps-Florida State football on Saturday. I’ve been making heavy use of Twitter on game days, and you can also check back here as always for previews and updates.

Looked at the hoops statistics lately? Here’s a stat that jumps out at me, even this early in the season. Pe’Shon Howard has a team-leading 12 assists coming off the bench (21.7 minutes per game average in three contests).

Howard has a knack for passing and is a guy that can fill a stat sheet. I predict that fellow freshman Terrell Stoglin will have a higher scoring average this season. I think Stoglin’s high-arcing outside shot looks very natural. But Howard is a slasher — rugged and confident — who will find ways to score and dish.

Like everyone following this team, I must resist the rush to judgment. Maryland’s freshmen will have some trying times ahead — everybody has growing pains — but it’s hard for observers not to be excited by this class.
