The family of a 13-year-old Southwest Side boy killed in a hit-and-run called on the driver to turn himself in Saturday.
Martin Urbina Jr. was on his way to stay overnight at his cousins’ home Friday night when he was struck by a car about 8:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of South California Avenue, relatives said.
The boy had gotten out of his aunt’s car and was walking west across California when a northbound gold-colored car hit him, police said.
“The car came from nowhere,” said the boy’s cousin, Jenny Quinones.
Urbina was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead about 9 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Quinones said Urbina, who lived on the 3900 block of West 70th Place, was a 7th-grade student at Hurley Elementary.
Quinones said her brother chased after the car that struck Urbina, but lost track when it turned onto Western Avenue.
“I wish he’d turn himself in,” Quinones said.
The driver was not in custody as of Saturday.
