“THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW” **1/2
6:30 p.m., FX
A genuinely spectacular but terminally predictable sci-fi movie from Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”) about the cataclysmic consequences of global warming, this “Day” mixes epic effects and amazing visualizations of catastrophe with a cliched, sappy family-in-crisis plot wasting Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum.

“CLERKS” ***
7:30 p.m., TMC
“Clerks” is a comedy about convenience store clerks, written and directed by a real-life clerk, 23-year-old Kevin Smith, and shot in the convenience store — a Quick Stop in Leonardo, N.J. — where he has worked since he was 19. That makes “Clerks,” in some ways, the movie equivalent of a garage band rock album. Quick, smart, light on its feet, it’s full of surprises.
