player ready...What a week it was for Jeremy Piven. He was about to board a flight to promote his upcoming film “Smokin’ Aces” when he noticed on TV his Malibu neighborhood engulfed in flames. “I literally was looking at a TV and said, `Is that my house on fire?”‘ Piven told us. “It’s very surreal.”
The house survived, but Piven arrived in Chicago only to have to douse reports of a beef with childhood buddy John Cusack. It all started when Piven hinted in a magazine that Cusack was having a hard time handling his success. (Cusack has said that isn’t the case.)
“It is what it is,” Piven said when we sat down last week. “We’re all busy people, so relationships maybe aren’t what they used to be. This is what happens. But I have known that guy since I was 8 years old. There is a really long, great relationship there.”
This week holds more for Piven, who’ll attend the Golden Globes on Monday–he’s nominated as best supporting actor for HBO’s “Entourage” –then host “Saturday Night Live.”
“It’s going to be a very busy time,” he said. “And it’s great.”
