Air travel these days can be hard enough. Imagine traveling with a suspicious-looking red puppet.
Kevin Clash–best-known as the voice of his alter ego, Elmo — says he sometimes gets strange looks when he has to take the case containing the furry red puppet through security.
“It’s interesting,” Clash told Armour & Co. when we sat down with him a few days ago. “Sometimes they pull him out and they don’t know what it is. I have to say, `Listen, that’s Elmo.’ Then all of a sudden, everybody’s giving me cell phones to leave messages for loved ones.”
Clash, who was in town signing copies of his book “My Life as a Furry Red Monster,” told us he’s already bracing for the hysteria surrounding the latest Tickle Me Elmo doll to hit toy store shelves. Clash hears from a lot of adults who tell him about fights for the little red doll–including Whoopi Goldberg, who once cornered Clash during an appearance on Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show.
“At one of the commercial breaks, she came over to me and gave me a bill,” Clash recalled. “I said, `What’s this for?’ She said, `I was in the store trying to buy a couple of these Tickle Me Elmo dolls and some woman pulled two of my [dreadlocks] out. This is the bill for putting them back in.'”
