Having ties to Notre Dame was a definite plus for several assistant coaches Charlie Weis hired after he was named Irish head coach in December.

“It’s really important that people understand what a Notre Dame mentality is,” Weis said. “That doesn’t mean football mentality is really any different. I’m talking about the whole school.

“In recruiting, you’re looking for a special type of kid. If you want to go find kids that are good kids [and good students], you have to be willing to go recruit nationally if you’re going in for the big boys. But I think it’s really important that you understand what Notre Dame stands for.”

Among those with Irish ties are offensive coordinator Mike Haywood, who played at Notre Dame, and defensive coordinator Rick Minter and quarterbacks coach Peter Vaas, both of whom served previous stints as Irish assistant coaches.
