Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis remembered New York Giants co-owner Wellington Mara, the man who gave Weis his first NFL paycheck. Mara, 89, died Tuesday from cancer.

“My first position in the NFL was working with Wellington Mara and Bill Parcells with the football Giants,” Weis said in a statement Wednesday. “Wellington Mara’s grandson, Timothy McDonnell, is a member of our staff here at Notre Dame.

“On behalf of my immediate family and the entire Notre Dame family, I would like to express our condolences. Our prayers are with the Mara family during this trying time.”

Weis began working with the Giants’ pro personnel department in 1989 while still a high school coach in New Jersey. He was named defensive assistant and assistant special-teams coach in 1990, when the Giants won the Super Bowl.
