Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis indeed thought USC tailback Reggie Bush made an illegal play when he pushed Trojans quarterback Matt Leinart into the end zone for the winning touchdown in Saturday’s game. But Weis wasn’t complaining.

“Is that illegal? Yes, it’s illegal,” Weis said. “Would I do the same thing? Absolutely. That’s a heads-up play by Reggie, and hopefully any running back I had would be pushing right along with them.”

Weis was so impressed with USC that he and son Charlie walked into the locker room to congratulate the Trojans. . . .

If Leinart had not scored, people would be talking about the final touchdown drive Irish quarterback Brady Quinn directed. Quinn drove the Irish 87 yards in eight plays, went 4-for-4 and, flushed out of the pocket by a charging Frostee Rucker, improvised a 12-yard completion to Jeff Samardzija on the run.

“I said to [Quinn] right before the drive, and this would have been prophetic had we won the game, `Hey, buddy, this is the type of drive that legends are made,'” Weis said. “He executed as well as could possibly be imagined.”
