player ready...We know how to calculate area (thanks to going through 4th-grade math again with our 10-year-old) but we’re stumped when it comes to calculating the right size area rug for a living room. Thank goodness there’s no pop quiz. And thank goodness there’s HGTV’s Kristan Cunningham of “Design on a Dime” who came to our rescue. This is what she’s got to say on this matter:
The size of an area rug should be determined by the scale and over all footprint of the furniture — not necessarily the size of the room. A good rule of thumb . . . is to have a minimum of 12 inches of rug “sticking out” around the perimeter of the furniture grouping. Anything less defeats the purpose of the pattern, color or texture that you’re bringing in. If a rug has a specific pattern that drew you to it in the first place, then go with a larger size so that the coffee table . . . doesn’t cover it. Taping off the dimensions of a rug or laying down newspaper is a great way to get a sense of the scale and make your purchase with confidence.
