If it sometimes seems Notre Dame running back Darius Walker is more likely to run out of bounds than run into a head-crunching collision with a defender, that’s by design.

“There are times where the average person would look at the hits and say, well, I wish he’d lower his shoulder and take one, and there are times that you count on people doing that,” coach Charlie Weis said. “We need one more yard to get the first down, I think he would be the first guy down there.”

But Weis said that after watching Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison continually avoid collisions a couple of years ago, he realized that sometimes it’s better to avoid the hit.

“I noticed, with all his production, any time the hits were coming, he was going down,” Weis said. “I thought this isn’t the stupidest thing in the whole world to have your best guy, when he’s about to get crunched, to make sure that doesn’t happen. There are times to take the hit and there are times not to take the hit.” . . .

Bob Davie, who coached his final game for Notre Dame at Ross-Ade Stadium in 2001, will be part of the team calling the game for ESPN.
