Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If the thought of tiling your kitchen backsplash–making sure tiles are plumb, cutting tiles to fit around outlets and other obstacles–screams “call a professional” but your budget is chanting “do it yourself, do it yourself,” well, listen up. Steve Bull of the DIY series “Fresh Coat” has this idea for us:

Go to a home-improvement or tile store and ask for broken or discontinued tiles (the discontinued tiles will be cheaper than current stock). Cover tiles with a cloth, pound with a mallet so you have smaller pieces, and start gluing the tile pieces [with tile adhesive bought at home-improvement stores] to the wall to obtain a mosaic backsplash. When dry, grout to seal the joints.
