Young amateur boxers soon will be able to test their skills at a monthly boxing event in the Sabre Room.

The City Council last week approved a six-month trial for the bouts, which will be run by Palos Hills-based Chicagoland Sports and Entertainment and sanctioned by USA Boxing.

Don Lenza, who runs Chicagoland Sports and Entertainment, said the events would have high safety standards.

He also said other boxing events he has held in the area have not posed any problems for police.

“It’s a big deal for my company and all the athletes in USA Boxing. These kids train very hard,” Lenza said.

No date has been set for the first bout.
