On Sept. 13, 1997, just two games into his tenure as head coach at Purdue, Joe Tiller led the Boilermakers to a 28-17 upset of the 12th-ranked Irish at Ross-Ade Stadium.

The victory wasn’t an isolated event–Tiller has a 3-1 record against Notre Dame at home. At Notre Dame Stadium, it’s a different story. Tiller has yet to win there in three tries.

In fact the Boilermakers haven’t posted a victory in South Bend since 1974, Ara Parseghian’s last season as Irish head coach, when Purdue scored 24 first-quarter points in a 31-20 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame.

“It has been pretty tough for everybody there except Michigan State,” said Tiller, referring to the Spartans’ current four-game streak. “Maybe it’s the water out of East Lansing. We have so much bottled water these days. I wonder if there’s a distiller in East Lansing because, if there is, we need to get some of it.”
