Despite victories over two Big Ten teams and one Pac-10 opponent, Notre Dame remains only on the cusp of the Top 25 rankings in both major college polls. In both the coaches’ poll and the media poll, the Irish are in 26th place.

Are they surprised they remain unranked?

Irish coach Tyrone Willingham votes in the coaches’ poll, and “I usually know where all the teams are,” he said. “[But] I have not focused on that. Purdue (4-0) offers us enough challenges that we don’t need to look at anything else.”

He could say the same about most of Notre Dame’s remaining opponents.

According to NCAA figures released Tuesday, the Irish have the toughest schedule in the country the rest of the way. Notre Dame’s remaining opponents have an aggregate record of 19-3.

“If we win with the schedule that we have at Notre Dame, we’ll be exactly where we should be,” Willingham said.
