Carlyle Holiday, Notre Dame’s quarterback turned wide receiver, now is returning punts. Against Michigan last week, Holiday returned seven punts for a total of 70 yards.

How did the coaching staff prepare him for his new role?

“That was really a pretty easy one,” Irish coach Tyrone Willingham said. “I don’t think it required anything on the coaches’ part. If you know Carlyle’s history, I think he played baseball at some point and the ability to catch flies is not that different than the ability to catch a punt–except you don’t have a glove.

“If you have those ball skills, it’s pretty easy to go back there and do it. He wanted to be back there, he wanted to go back there and have success.”

Will Holiday add kickoff returns against Michigan State?

“There’s a possibility,” Willingham said.
