Sitting as his teammates sank was not, senior tailback Ryan Grant said, his idea of a good time.

Nursing a hamstring injury during preseason drills, Grant has faced limited contact in practice.

So as they watched Grant warm up on the field Friday at LaVell Edwards Stadium, Irish coaches took the precautionary measure of holding him out of Notre Dame’s 20-17 loss Saturday night at Brigham Young.

“There were a couple of series where I just wanted to will myself out there, just kind of tell the other backs, `OK, fly back, I’m going to get in the huddle,'” Grant said.

Grant anticipates being in the huddle Saturday, when the Irish take on Michigan.

“That’s what I expect,” he said, “unless I get struck by lightning or something.”
