Freshmen

Ted Ginn Jr.

Cornerback, Ohio State. The Superprep Defensive Player of the Year will be on the field this fall. He’s also a game-breaker as a kick returner.

Albert Young

Tailback, Iowa. The 5-10, 207-pound New Jersey rookie would have played last year if not for a broken leg.

Chad Henne

Quarterback, Michigan. It wouldn’t be that surprising if the jewel of Michigan’s annual freshman harvest plays this year.

Dorien Bryant

Wide receiver, Purdue. The military school product has made the two-deeps and coaches are trying to get him on the field with Taylor Stubblefield.

Carl Grimes

Wide receiver, Michigan State. He’ll be one of several true freshmen scheduled to play this fall for the Spartans. Fast and can return kicks.

Sophomores

Laurence Maroney

Tailback, Minnesota. The St. Louis sprinter gained more than 1,000 yards as a freshman. Along with Marion Barber III, he gives the Gophers perhaps the best 1-2 running combination in the country.

Steve Breaston

Wide receiver, Michigan. One of a number of excellent Wolverines receivers, he may have a bigger impact as a kick returner. Fast and shifty.

Justin Zwick

Quarterback, Ohio State. The 6-4, 225-pounder is one of the Buckeyes’ most heralded recruits. He’s a graduate of Ohio’s famed Massillon Washington High.

E.B. Halsey

Tailback, Illinois. A complete back. He ran for 525 yards and caught 37 passes as a freshman.

Brandon Fields

Punter, Michigan State. All-Big Ten last fall with a 46.4 average. No. 2 nationally.

Juniors

Matt Gutierrez

Quarterback, Michigan. The redshirt sophomore will replace John Navarre. Has a wealth of talent around him.

A.J. Hawk

Linebacker, Ohio State. The preseason Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. One of just four defensive returnees for the Buckeyes.

Abdul Hodge

Linebacker, Iowa. The Florida native was second in the conference in tackles a year ago. Teams with Chad Greenway to give Iowa the conference’s best set of linebackers.

Marion Barber III

Tailback, Minnesota. Ran for a school-record 17 touchdowns. Combines with Maroney to give Gophers a 1-1A punch.

Zach Streif

Tackle, Northwestern. The giant (6-7, 335) right tackle heads an all-veteran line. Wildcats will run behind him.

Seniors

Anthony Davis

Tailback, Wisconsin. When healthy, he’s the best in the Big Ten. The key word is healthy.

Braylon Edwards

Wide receiver, Michigan. Caught 85 passes for 1,138 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Wears No. 1 for good reason.

Marlin Jackson

Cornerback, Michigan. Passed up the NFL draft for his senior year. Makes the Wolverines secondary the best in the conference.

Kyle Orton

Quarterback, Purdue. The top returning quarterback in the conference. Could be a Heisman contender if the Boilers have a nine- or 10-win season.

Matt Roth

Defensive end, Iowa. The former Tribune All-Stater and state wrestling champion from Willowbrook had 11.5 sacks last year. Very disruptive for opposing offenses.

Off the list

Brett Basanez

Quarterback, Northwestern. Had a sub-par sophomore year but could get back on the list if he repeats 2001 performance.

Jon Beutjer

Quarterback, Illinois. There is no super-senior category. Needs to win games in his sixth season.

Maurice Clarett

Tailback, Ohio State. Lost his legal battle to be eligible for the NFL draft.

Chris Gamble

Cornerback, Ohio State. Another Buckeye now playing in the NFL. A dual threat at Ohio State as a cornerback and wide receiver.

Zack Mills

Quarterback, Penn State. Needs to stay healthy and get help from his receivers if Nittany Lions are to return to a bowl game.
