The state attorney general’s office is warning companies to watch out for telephone “slamming” scams.
Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan brought charges against a Michigan company last week for allegedly switching the long-distance phone service of more than 20 small businesses in Illinois without their permission.
The company, LCR Telecommunications LLC, was the subject of 22 complaints to Madigan’s office and is also charged with providing the attorney general with “falsified proof of authorization” for the switches, according to a news release from Madigan’s office.
The attorney general provided several tips to business owners and consumers on how to avoid scams:
– Check phone bills to make sure the long-distance carrier hasn’t changed.

– Look for hidden charges on phone bills or unexpected fees for a provider switch.
– Contact the local phone company to put on a PIC freeze, which blocks changing the long-distance carrier.
