The lingering question of who is the village attorney will remain unanswered until a judge decides whether the village has hired any of its law firms properly.

A ruling on the status of as many as 10 lawyers–with expertise in finance, labor and other fields–could come by the end of the week.

“If a judge throws out all those firms, we may be looking for an attorney who can do all those jobs,” Trustee Jim Daluga said after the board’s meeting Monday.

The Village Board put off voting on Village President Marshall Reagle’s nominee for village attorney, Mark Daniel of Elmhurst, without discussion.

The village was left without an attorney in June when a judge agreed with Reagle that Edward Springer, who held the job for 13 years, was hired improperly. Reagle wanted authority to hire and fire the attorney. The two sides compromised, with Reagle naming the candidate and the board voting to approve or not.

Reagle’s second question–whether the ruling affects other law firms hired for village business–remains.

Cook County Circuit Judge David Donnersberger set a hearing for Friday.
